BATUR SÖNMEZ „noiseistanbul“
Audiovisual sound installation Istanbul

The project, inspired by its native surroundings, consists of electronic music
productions presented with accompanying visual materials based on the city of
Istanbul and its unique sounds and noises. Beside its legendary beauty, Istanbul has an ambience comprised of various sounds and noises which pass unnoticed in daily life. This provides the basis for the project. The musician, Batur Sönmez interprets this content with his own artistic style, and presents these ambient sounds through music, rather than analyzing them. Cities partly shape the characteristics of their residents, while at the same time the cities themselves become a synthesis and reflection of their own inhabitants. The artist considers
this project as involving diligent efforts, and he is fully aware of this duty at the initial stage. The project can also be seen allegorically in a similar way to medical
studies which use toxic materials to produce antidotes. In our context, the main theme is taking the relation between the city and its soundscapes as the material and translating this material to music and art, in order to make it an audio-visual artwork. In noiseistanbul, Batur Sönmez is presenting the sounds and noises of
Istanbul with electronic and experimental music approach. Additionally, the
project takes on a multimedia identity through the inclusion of visual elements.

Batur Sönmez was born in Istanbul. He started his first experimental electronic industrial project in 1998 and is working as an audio visual artist. His style varies between industrial electronic and noise-based experimental sounds to improvisation. He is active in a lot of different musical projects such as  Analog Suicide, Mindscan, Btr. Unit, Dadaloop, Vertebra, Radiophonik, Dead Frequencies, etc.  in order to widen and live up "experimental electronic noise music" and "contemporary art" in Turkey. He also works on sound art, video art, multimedia & short-film. He lives and works in Istanbul and is curator for experimental projects and related festivals.
